OOH and Social Media Integration in Jakarta: Giving Each Site and Channel Its Own Job

Screens give scale and a real place; social carries the detail and the conversation. How to split the roles, choose between Bundaran HI, Senopati, Dukuh Atas and Slipi, and measure results without inflated numbers.

OOH and social media integration works when each channel has a separate job. The screen or billboard on the street supplies scale, a real place, and a reason to pull out a phone. Social carries everything a driver cannot read from a moving car: promo terms, how to join, where to buy, and the conversation afterwards. Campaigns that disappoint usually run the identical artwork in both places and hope the audience connects the dots on its own.

For brands and agencies planning in Jakarta from abroad, this is how we usually split the roles with the client's social team, which sites suit which role, and how to read the outcome without inventing numbers.

Agree on the division of labour at the brief stage

The social team is often brought in after the videotron artwork is locked. The result is a hashtag squeezed into a corner of a 9 x 18 m screen where nobody can read it, and an Instagram post that is just a flat photo of that screen. Get both teams in one room in week one and agree on a single campaign idea, one key line, and what should happen on a phone after someone sees the outdoor piece.

Three formats for OOH and social media integration

Not every campaign needs an elaborate activation. Most integrated work we see in Jakarta falls into one of three patterns, each with different production demands.

The screen as a stage, social as the broadcast

This is the lightest option. The brand books a screen that is visually worth filming, and the content team cuts short videos from the best angle for the brand's own accounts. The robotic LED at Bundaran HI, Indonesia's first robotic LED, is often chosen for this because the moving panels are content in themselves. It sits on the Mandarin Oriental, faces the Bundaran HI roundabout, and has three faces measuring 27 x 9 m, 8 x 16 m and 27 x 9 m. Samsung's Unpacked campaign ran on this LED Mandarin unit, for example.

Plan for a play schedule your content crew knows in advance, a safe and permitted filming position, and an artwork version that still reads when filmed from a distance. Sunday mornings during Jakarta's Car Free Day on the Thamrin corridor are a common choice, since the area is closed to traffic and full of pedestrians.

Physical installations built to be photographed

Here the object itself is the reason people take pictures. Themed bus shelters, meeting points and decorated public spaces give people somewhere to stand, sit and pose. HBO GO's creative branding campaign, for instance, turned a bus shelter into a wall of series and film posters with a QR code on the side panel. People waiting for a bus have a few minutes to spare, which makes a QR code and a follow prompt far more reasonable there than on a roadside screen next to a toll road.

The details decide whether it gets shared: lighting after dark, a camera angle that frames the logo without forcing it, and one element that invites people into the shot.

Digital activations that generate visitor content

The third pattern is the most interactive. Photobooths, motion games or AR experiences produce photos and clips that visitors take home and post on their own accounts. When the output also appears on an LED screen on site, passers-by see that there is something to join and a queue tends to form. We run this kind of format under our on-ground digital activity service.

Budget and lead time are higher: hardware, software, operators, and a content approval flow. Build in moderation time, because every visitor image that appears on a public screen has to be checked first.

Pick sites by behaviour: passing by or stopping to shoot

Each OOH site has a different audience behaviour, and that decides what social should do. The first question we ask a client is whether the people in front of the screen are moving fast or on foot.

  • Pedestrian and dining areas. LED Senopati is 8 x 4 m and faces towards SCBD, along a strip packed with restaurants and cafes. People are more likely to see it while stationary, so asking them to search a handle or hashtag is realistic.
  • Commuter corridors. LED Dukuh Atas (7 x 14 m) faces Jl. Jend. Sudirman towards Senayan, next to a busy transport interchange. Use a short, repeated message and back it with location-targeted social ads during the evening commute.
  • Arterial roads and toll approaches. LED Slipi is 9 x 18 m and faces towards Semanggi. Drivers get a few seconds, so skip the QR code and show the brand name plus one searchable word.
  • Indoor mall screens. The units at Agora Lifestyle Mall in Tanah Abang are seen by people who already have a phone in hand and time to use it. This is where a QR code earns its space.

A combination that often makes sense: one landmark site for content, several corridor sites for frequency, and one pedestrian or mall site for conversion.

One idea, two formats

Videotron and social creative should look related, not identical. A landscape file built for Slipi cannot simply be cropped into a 9:16 vertical for Reels or TikTok. Build a master visual whose elements can be rearranged: logo, product or character, one key line, and the dominant colour.

Outdoors, one line and one image are enough. On social, that same line opens the post and the detail follows in the caption or the next slides. If you use a hashtag, keep it short, check nobody else owns it, and test its legibility on the actual screen rather than an office monitor. We usually mock artwork onto a site photo before final production.

Digital screens let you change content mid-flight. A countdown to the promo date, different day and night versions, or announcing a social contest winner on screen can all be scheduled, provided the new files arrive before the playout deadline and pass content checks. We covered QR code practice in outdoor media in a separate piece on QR codes in OOH advertising.

The year-end calendar starts now

Mid-October is a sensible point to lock plans for 12.12, Christmas and New Year's Eve in Jakarta. Landmark slots in the last weeks of December tend to be requested early, and physical installations or digital activations need time for design, fabrication and permits.

A sequence we often use: a social teaser first, then the OOH flight as a filmable reveal, followed by a weekend activation or installation, and sustain content on social for the rest of the period. Ask the paid social team to align their spend with the OOH flight dates instead of running a separate calendar.

Reading results without making up numbers

OOH does not produce clicks, so its effect shows up in indirect signals. Four are realistic to track. Branded and campaign-keyword search during the flight compared with the weeks before it. Hashtag posts and mentions, especially geotagged ones near the sites. QR scans using a different UTM link per site, so you can see which location actually triggered action. And our proof-of-play reports and field photos, which you can line up against spikes in social activity.

Agree on these metrics and who collects them before launch. Data gathered after the campaign without a baseline is hard to interpret.

Content rights, faces and permits

Visitor content shown again on a public screen or a brand account needs the owner's consent. Put clear terms and conditions in place at the activation, and do not show faces or personal data without permission, in line with Indonesia's Personal Data Protection Law. Music in social cuts needs the right licence too.

Installations on pavements or bus shelters involve advertising permits and local advertising tax that differ from screen bookings. Raise this with our team early so it does not push your launch date.

Next step

Send us four things: the campaign objective in one sentence, flight dates, target cities, and the social assets already running. We will propose a mix of DOOH, billboard, transit or activation that fits, and walk you through what drives cost: duration, slot count, production size and permits. Frequently Asked Questions

Does every videotron campaign need social support?

Not strictly, but without it the offer details and the conversation have nowhere to live. At minimum, plan one post and location-targeted ads during the flight.

Where do QR codes still make sense in OOH?

Where people stop or walk: themed bus shelters, the dining strip around Senopati, or indoor mall screens. On a roadside screen like Slipi, facing fast traffic, almost nobody can scan in time.

Can we change the artwork during a DOOH flight?

Yes. Countdowns or contest announcements can be scheduled, as long as files arrive before the playout deadline and pass content checks.

How do we measure the effect of OOH on social?

Compare branded search and hashtag mentions before and during the flight, use a separate UTM link per site for QR codes, and match activity against our proof-of-play reports.
