Creative Branding in Public Spaces in Jakarta, from Themed Bus Shelters to Meeting Points

Themed bus shelters, landmark meeting points and builds with screens or photo booths: when the format fits a plan, how to choose a site, what drives cost, permits and upkeep, and which nearby LED screens pair well.

Creative branding in public spaces means taking a structure people already use every day, such as a bus shelter, a waiting area or a pick-up point, and rebuilding it as part of a campaign for a fixed period. Unlike a billboard, it is not something people glance at from a distance. They sit in it, shelter under it and photograph it. In Jakarta, where commuters spend long minutes waiting at the roadside, that difference is the whole point of the format.

This piece is written for brand and agency teams planning activity in Indonesia. It covers the formats we build most often, where they fit in a media plan, what drives cost, and what to sort out before anything is fabricated.

What creative branding in public spaces looks like in Jakarta

In practice it is a re-skin of a physical structure using three-dimensional elements, print, lighting or screens, so the structure itself becomes part of the brand's world. You are not booking a flat panel that was built for advertising. You are changing the shape of the object.

That makes the planning closer to a small fit-out project than a media booking: site survey, technical drawings, material choices, workshop production, overnight installation, maintenance during the flight, then removal and restoration of the site.

Themed bus shelters

This is the format that appears most in our gallery. Roof, back panels, benches and floor are redesigned around the campaign. Shelters we have produced include an HBO GO shelter, a "VIP" shelter for XL, a Decolgen shelter under a bright orange canopy, and film-themed shelters for Netflix's Army of the Dead and Disney's Solo: A Star Wars Story. Film work tends to treat the shelter like a set: dark interior, backlit panels and props that echo the movie.

Shelters work because people wait there. That dwell time lets you carry more than a roadside billboard can: a QR code, release dates, or an invitation to try something.

Landmark structures and meeting points

The second format is a standalone structure with a real job to do. Grab used this approach with a green dome-shaped meeting point booth flanked by signage posts. Because the structure solved an actual problem, where to meet a driver, people walked to it on purpose, and its unusual silhouette made it easy to spot from across the road.

Builds with a digital layer

Physical builds can carry screens, sensors or cameras for photo booths and simple games. That is where creative branding meets our on-ground digital activity service. It is the right add-on when the brand needs participation data such as photo uploads or QR scans rather than visual impact alone. If you are considering game mechanics, our piece on brand activation gamification covers how to design them.

When the format earns its place in the plan

We see three situations where it pays off. Launches that need something to talk about, such as a theatrical release or a product with a strong visual identity. Brands that want to be tied to a function in the city, like a ride-hailing app and its pick-up points. And campaigns that are built around user-generated content, because an unusual structure gets photographed.

It is the wrong tool when you need broad reach across many cities within a short window. Every installation is its own production job, so duplicating it across dozens of sites multiplies both cost and lead time. For that kind of brief, LED videotron or Transjabodetabek bus wraps do the heavy lifting, and one or two creative branding sites act as the centrepiece.

Set expectations honestly with stakeholders. A themed shelter will not move sales figures on its own. What you can measure fairly is activity around it: QR scans, posts using the campaign hashtag, press pick-up and social conversation. Agree those indicators before launch so the post-campaign report has something to stand on.

Choosing the site

Location decides who interacts. Shelters along the Sudirman and Gatot Subroto office corridors fill with office workers at commuting hours. The area around Bundaran HI is packed with pedestrians during the Sunday morning car-free day. Malls such as Agora Lifestyle Mall in Tanah Abang draw visitors who are there to browse and have time to stop.

During the survey we check the following before recommending a site:

  • Which direction pedestrians arrive from, because the design has to open towards them.
  • The structure's condition: frame strength, power supply for lights or screens, and drainage in heavy rain.
  • Sightlines from the road, so the build also works for drivers who never stop.
  • Who manages the site and which permits apply for the planned period.
  • Night-time installation access that does not disrupt public services.

What drives the cost

We do not publish figures because every build is costed from its drawings. These are the variables that matter most.

FactorWhat pushes it up
Size and complexityThree-dimensional shapes, curves and custom props rather than flat panels
MaterialsAcrylic, LED lighting and weather-resistant materials for longer flights
Digital elementsScreens, sensors, photo booth cameras and interactive content
Flight lengthLonger periods mean more maintenance visits and longer site rental
Number of sitesEach site needs its own survey, design adaptation and install crew
Permits and advertising taxVary by site and by the managing authority

The fastest way to a realistic number is a short brief: campaign objective, dates, city and a few reference visuals. From that our team can propose two or three options at different levels of complexity.

Permits, safety and upkeep

A build in public space involves several parties: whoever manages the shelter or land, the local government for permits and advertising tax, and the people who rely on the facility every day. Rules differ by site, so permits should be settled before production starts, and our team will walk you through what applies. International teams sometimes assume approvals can follow installation. Plan as if they cannot.

The facility has to keep doing its job. Benches stay usable, route information stays readable, and there are no sharp edges or exposed cables. A shelter that photographs well but inconveniences commuters turns into a public complaint with your brand name on it.

Then there is upkeep. Dust, tropical rain and constant handling wear materials down quickly. Schedule regular checks, keep spare prints for the panels people touch most, and ask for periodic photo documentation as proof of condition.

Pairing a build with nearby LED screens

A physical build reaches people walking past it. To reach traffic in the same corridor, pair it with a screen nearby. Some of our sites that work well as companions:

LED Mandarin on the Mandarin Oriental Hotel is the first robotic LED in Indonesia, with three faces measuring 27 x 9 m, 8 x 16 m and 27 x 9 m, facing Bundaran HI. It is the natural partner for activity around Thamrin and the car-free day. LED Dukuh Atas, 7 x 14 m, faces traffic on Jalan Jenderal Sudirman heading to Senayan, which suits a build on the Sudirman corridor. LED Denpasar sits at the Denpasar Transjakarta stop in front of Menara BPJAMSOSTEK on Gatot Subroto, so it is relevant when the campaign targets shelter users. Outside Jakarta, the 6 x 12 m LED JPO Metropolitan Mall Bekasi can support an activation at that mall.

The logic is simple. The screen carries the headline and points people to the build, the build delivers the experience, and visitor content extends the campaign on social media.

Timing for year-end campaigns

Mid-October is the right moment to start if you are targeting Christmas and New Year. Holiday film releases, December shopping promotions and New Year's Eve events crowd the city with brand activity, and installation windows at popular sites fill up. Our usual sequence is brief and survey, concept and drawings, permits running in parallel with production, installation, then the live period with maintenance. The more custom the structure, the longer production takes, so lock the design early.

If time is short, lean on printed panels and lighting rather than sculpted shapes. The result still stands apart from standard advertising, and production is much faster.

Before you brief us

Have three things ready: a start date that cannot move, the part of the city you want to reach, and one sentence on what people should do after they see your build. Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a creative branding installation usually stay up?

It depends on the agreement with the site manager and the campaign need. Longer flights call for weather-resistant materials and scheduled maintenance, so set the duration at concept stage.

Can commuters still use a branded bus shelter?

They must. Benches, roof and route information stay functional and the design cannot get in passengers' way. We treat that as a fixed requirement for every themed shelter.

Who handles permits and advertising tax?

Rules vary by site and managing authority. Our team maps the permits needed before production begins, so share your target locations early.

Can a build include a photo booth or interactive screen?

Yes. Screens, cameras or sensors can be added through our on-ground digital activity service, which helps when you need participation data such as photo uploads or QR scans.

How do I get a quote?

Send your objective, dates, city and reference visuals via WhatsApp +6282288108888 or email. We will come back with options at different levels of complexity and a quote.
