Renting a billboard in Jakarta means booking one face of a structure on one stretch of road for a fixed period, with lighting and upkeep handled by the media owner. For a brand or agency planning from outside Indonesia, three decisions drive almost everything else: which road and traffic direction your audience actually uses, how many months the artwork needs to stay up, and who handles printing, installation and the local advertising tax. Settle those early and the path from quote to installed artwork is short.

Late October is a sensible moment to start. Brands targeting December and the first weeks of the new year usually lock their sites well ahead, because the artwork still has to be approved, printed and hung before the start date.

What a Jakarta billboard rental actually covers

You are buying display time on a structure the media owner operates, not the structure itself. A typical contract bundles several components: the face rental for the period, floodlighting so the board reads at night, structural maintenance, and printing and installing your artwork. Billboard tax, known locally as pajak reklame, is assessed separately by the regional government based on size, location and duration.

This is why quotes from different suppliers rarely compare like for like. One may include printing and a single installation; another may quote space only. Ask for a written breakdown that states what is included, how many artwork changes are priced in, and who files the advertising tax. International teams used to all-in rate cards elsewhere get caught out by this more than anything else.

Choosing a billboard site in Jakarta by commuter route

A static board shows one message all day, so its value depends on who passes it, in which direction and at what speed. Start with your audience's commute: where do they travel from and to in the morning and evening peaks? Then match that to the direction each board faces.

The southern corridor

Both TB Simatupang and Lebak Bulus face towards Lebak Bulus, yet they catch different flows. The Simatupang board sits on the westbound route out of the Cilandak office district, while the Jl. RA Kartini board reads to traffic coming down from Fatmawati. For a brand chasing South Jakarta office workers who live towards Pondok Indah, Bintaro or South Tangerang, this pair does more work than a single board in the centre. Grab has run GrabFood and Grab Bike artwork on Billboard TB Simatupang, and Ultra Milk, Ace Hardware and Nescafe have appeared on Billboard Lebak Bulus.

Kuningan and Cililitan

Billboard Kota Kasablanka on Jl. Dr. Saharjo faces Kuningan, so its readers are drivers heading from Tebet and Manggarai into the business district. Traveloka and Somethinc have both used it. Billboard PGC on Jl. Dewi Sartika faces Jl. Raya Bogor and Cililitan, a heavy route in and out of East Jakarta, where Grab has run GrabFood and Grab Express.

West Jakarta

Jl. Arjuna Selatan has two 6 x 12 m faces. Our inventory lists one reading to traffic towards central Jakarta and the other to traffic towards Tangerang, so booking both covers the morning and evening trips of people living in the west. Coolvita has run on Arjuna A and Lifebuoy on Arjuna B. Before shortlisting, it is worth reading how we assess billboard visibility on site.

If you can, drive past the shortlisted boards yourself at rush hour from the same direction as your audience. Note where the board first becomes visible, whether trees, footbridges or other signs block it, and whether traffic slows in front of it. A quarter of an hour on the road tells you more than any proposal photo. For a brand that wants to own a corridor, two boards on complementary directions beat several boards on one stretch: the Simatupang and Lebak Bulus pair for southbound flow, or Arjuna A and B for both directions in the west.

Rental length and booking for the year-end period

Static billboards in Jakarta are generally rented by the month, and very short bookings rarely pay off because print and installation costs stay the same however long the artwork runs. For seasonal work, plan backwards from the go-live date: time for the creative team to adapt the key visual, time for client approval, then printing and installation. Ask for that timeline in writing with the quote so everyone works to the same dates.

For a December to January run we usually suggest one of two approaches. Either design a single artwork that stays relevant for both months, focused on product and where to buy rather than promo dates, or plan an early-January artwork change now so the second print and hang are budgeted and scheduled before the busy changeover period.

Artwork format, print proofing and night visibility

One practical detail saves global teams a lot of rework. Both the 8 x 16 m and 6 x 12 m boards are portrait with a 1:2 ratio, so one master artwork works across TB Simatupang, Lebak Bulus, Kota Kasablanka, PGC and Arjuna with only resolution and safe-margin adjustments. If your key visual was built landscape for TV or social, brief a dedicated portrait version from the start. Cropping landscape into portrait almost always leaves the logo and headline too small.

Ask for a colour proof, or at least a small test print on the same material, before the full run. Brand colours that look right on a designer's monitor often shift on billboard print stock, and reprinting a 16-metre-tall artwork costs far more than a proof. Keep the message to one line, a large logo and one product visual; our notes on readable billboard design go into detail. Check the night version too. The boards are lit by floodlights mounted on the top frame, so white backgrounds and bright colours hold up after dark while small details in dark areas tend to disappear.

Permits and advertising tax

Sites offered by an established media owner already stand on permitted structures, but advertising tax still attaches to the artwork displayed and the period it runs. Do not assume it is included. Ask who files it, when it is paid and which documents the brand needs to supply. If you have questions about rules in a particular area, talk them through with our team before artwork goes to print.

What drives the rental cost

We do not publish figures because the cost depends on a combination of factors and on availability for your dates:

  • Location and facing, especially roads that are congested at peak hours.
  • Board size, for example 8 x 16 m versus 6 x 12 m.
  • Contract length and season, with year-end in higher demand.
  • The number of print runs and installations during the contract.
  • Regional advertising tax.
  • Multi-site packages, such as the Arjuna A and B pair.

The full site list is on our Jakarta billboard service page.

While the contract runs

Once the artwork is up, ask for dated field photos, day and night, taken from the driver's point of view. Our team shoots these routinely for each site, including the photos in this article. Use them for client reporting and to check that printed colours match the approved file. If weather damages the vinyl or a floodlight fails, report it with a photo so it can be fixed quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the usual minimum term for a billboard rental in Jakarta?

Static billboards are generally rented by the month. Minimum terms and availability vary by site, so ask our team for the dates you have in mind.

Does the rental include printing and installation?

It depends on the quote. Ask for a written breakdown showing whether printing, installation, the number of artwork changes and advertising tax filing are included.

Can one artwork run across all your Jakarta billboards?

Yes. The 8 x 16 m and 6 x 12 m boards are both portrait with a 1:2 ratio, so one master artwork only needs resolution and safe-margin adjustments.

When should we book for a December to January campaign?

Start now. Work backwards from the go-live date for approval, printing and installation, then check site availability with us on WhatsApp at +6282288108888.

Planning a DOOH or brand activation campaign?
